Dancers do warfare for so many people. You are a prophetic act. An act of faith. Dance is no less than worship leaders or backup vocals, no less than musicians, when you are willing to take up your calling, and move into the prophetic, to sense what the Lord is doing in the atmosphere, and release it over people, over the congregation, as a prayer, as a dance, as a movement.
Just like Moses held up his hands and the Israelites prevailed. Just like holding up of the bronze serpent and all who looked at it were healed, just like Jesus on the cross, is a visual sign of what God is doing.
Is a move of faith, like when the Israelites marched around Jericho, and the walls fell down. When king Jehoshaphat went against his enemies, he sent the worshippers ahead, and the Lord sent angels to confuse the enemies’ camp. They did not even lose a single arrow.
Dancers are not trying to grab attention for ourselves, but reflecting it to God, it is a mind-set shift. God is really not about me, it’s about You. Not about how I look.
Is such an oxymoron, dance is visual, banners are visual, dancers are visual and all are attention grabbing, yet people can sense our spirit. And if our spirit worships the Lord, and directs the attention to Him, people know it too.
And therefore dancers must walk in humility, and yet walk in great confidence, having an assurance of who we are in Christ, so that when misunderstandings come, when people don’t know what we are trying to do, and say it is distraction, we know how to act in humility. We know when to step back, and give room for people’s understanding to grow. Yet we also know not to give up, to not get hurt, to keep moving forward, to know when to pull, when to release the string holding the kite.
Just like during altar call, it’s such a sacred moment. We need to know when to be quiet, when to be still, when to direct attention and focus on the pastor ministering, when to dance, when to stir, when to release to the congregation, we know when to step aside and allow other dancers to move, we know when to dance together, when to dance on our own. When to use our flags, when to dance without flags. Because we are all connected in the Spirit, therefore though there are no set moves, not set instructions given, yet we know the appropriate time to do the appropriate thing.
Yet I want to say this, it is necessary to improve in our craft. It is important to want to be excellent in what we offer to the Lord. Because although God looks at the heart, yet if we want to minister, people still see our craft. And because dance is visual, there is really nowhere to hide. So for those that want to minister in a greater measure, I hope we will consider to spend time to hone our craft, go for dance classes. Above all, worship!
